About Wanda:"Wanda Kerr, a Canadian, lives precisely half way between the Equator and North Pole on a narrow limestone peninsula between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. She is devoted to the promotion and expansion of rug hooking and works tirelesslyto that end. A Mcgown certified teacher who believes more is more, she divides her time between facilitating and firing others to greater rugs and striving for new boundaries with her own work. | Classes & lectures in Mary Anne's teaching repertoire:
"Becoming Your Own Teacher" There are no right or wrong answers to the thought provoking questions Mary Anne poses in this class. The answers, however, can increase your awareness of the composition making process and refine your visual vocabulary. Object lessons follow each question; drawing skills helpful but not necessary. Mary Anne's course titled "Developing Your Own Recognizable Imagery" is helpful but not necessary. This idea spawning seminar is geared to advanced and advanced intermediate rug hookers who hook their own designs. Note: participants should be willing to spend apx 5 hours on pre-class assignments. The course can be constructed to fit a 2 - 5 day class framework (including time to hook in the longer session). "Developing Your Own Recognizable Imagery" You've gone well beyond basic rug hooking, you design many of your own rugs and you are passionate about your work, but you are uncertain of your next step. Where does your work go from here? In this class participants will learn the elements that characterize a recognizable stye and learn techniques to discover their own style, over time. The focus of this class is on the process, not a product. Slide lectures illustrate key points followed by object lessons to refine awareness of what Mary Anne refers to as "visual vocabulary". During the class participants will juggle and mix their own vocabulary of images, icons and patterns. When you return home after class, these techniques can be applied to making work in a series or charting a new course of imagery. Note: participants should be willing to spend approximately 10 hours on pre-class homework. This course can be structured to fit a 2 - 3 day class framework. "Introduction to Composition"." This design class is intended for the beginning textile artist or intermediate rug hooker who is seeking to expand their compositional skills. Mary Anne will explain her design process from conception to completed rug. She will teach you techniques enabling you to shape your ideas into a strong finished composition. Daily slide lectures illustrate key points. Bring your favorite drawing tools, inspirational references, backing material, plenty of ideas, and a very open mind. No drawing skills required. This course can be structured to fit a 2 - 5 day class framework (including time to hook in the longer session). "Not Your Grandmothers' Toolbox: Using Technology as Design Tool" part demonstration & part object lesson seminar. With her laptop and digital projector, Mary Anne will demonstrate how she applies Photoshop as a computer aided design tool for rug hooking. After the demonstration, students will participate in a round-robin of object lessons at design stations positioned around the room. Using familiar tools rather than the computer, each station provides an actual lesson which the computer makes possible with a few keystrokes, from scaling, to cloning, to altering a color scheme. By comparing the computer to familiar tools used in the round robin, like the xerox machine and paint brush, participants may decide to explore the possibilities within the Photoshop software program. Includes a 13 page handout on using Photoshop. This course is intended as a 2 hour seminar but may be structured for a day-long participatory class. Lecture: "Contemporary Rug Hooking & Tufting in America- a slide survey", length of this lecture is apx. 1 hour Lecture: "Select Rug Hookers' Artistic Maturation Process & Favorite Rugs- a slide survey", length of this lecture is apx. 1 hour Lecture: Custom Artisan Business Practices This lecture is intended to introduce audience members to the wide world of national design trade opportunities and to de mystify the process of approaching Merchandise Mart showrooms and their common business practices. I discuss how I started my custom rug weaving business and I explain why working with design trade showrooms is a viable option to working with galleries. This lecture is applicable to anyone with a custom product idea for the design trade- lighting, furniture, fabrics, rugs, etc. |
